"Owen is 4 years old and Autistic. He is still considered nonverbal and can be hypersensitive to sensory experiences. My husband and I have been apprehensive to sign him up for swim lessons in the past until we learned about Safe Swim. Owen warmed up very quickly to Gianna and his instructors, who went above and beyond to meet his needs. They made laminated communication cards to use during lessons and really worked to meet his individual needs. By the end of the 6 week session, Owen picked up many important swimming skills- safely entering and exiting a pool, holding onto the wall, floating with a noodle, and kicking his feet. To this day, Owen will still point and ask for “swimmy” every time we drive past the pool. That shows us how much he enjoyed the program and misses his weekly lessons. Our community is so lucky to have this amazing program available to help kids and young adults with special needs." - Holly M.
"Safe Swim is the most impactful program our daughter had ever participated in in any context. She’s autistic and fun-loving and independent. Safe Swim helped her have an authentic, fun, and impactful experience learning how to enjoy water safely. She grew tremendously from the experience, but what we care most about is that she loved every minute of the swim program. She developed wonderful relationships with her teachers and looked forward to having fun swimming every week. The program was the only activity of any type my daughter has ever enjoyed independently and consistently attended where I’m not sitting with her in the same space. This shows me that she built confidence, had fun, and had trust in the program that it was a group she could feel safe and included with. " - Lindsey W.
"Our son has always had a love for water. Being non verbal, made it more of a challenge for us to get him into any typical swim lesson programs. Safe swim for all gave him the opportunity! This program allowed him to get one on one instruction that was tailored to fit his needs. The instructors kept in mind that he has a different way of communicating, and because of this he was able to be successful! He learned so much!" - Jaimie F.
"As a mom of a kiddo with a few extra needs, it is so important to me to give her as close to a normal childhood as we can. Finding the Safe Swim Program was huge for us as it gave Juniper the chance to just be a kid learning to swim. She gained so much bravery and skill in the water, which is more than I could have hoped for her. Juno is more comfortable, stronger, and her confidence both in and out of the pool has grown so much because of her time with Miss Anna, Miss Gianna, and all the instructors who we were lucky enough to meet! We couldn’t be more grateful for this program and will always support it however we can!" - Courtney K.
"Safe Swim was an awesome opportunity for our special needs daughter. She just loves swimming and getting to do so, with college students cheering her on, was wonderful for her confidence and for her physical development. What a gift this program is; there are not enough activities offered for kids with special needs in this area. Our daughter finally had an extra curricular activity that she could thrive in! "Jonas loves to swim and is surprisingly good at it however he swims differently than other children do because of his spina bifida. He also feels self-conscious about his scars from multiple surgeries. After his first day at safe swim he was so happy to know that there was a place he could be where other kids faced similar challenges. It was refreshing for him to see children who, like him, use different strategies to have fun in the water. All of the participants and the staff were welcoming and there was never any feeling of judgment. Because of the emotionally safe environment he was able to focus on improving how he moves in the water. The instructors were fantastic at adapting different swimming styles to fit his ability. He definitely can move through the water faster! He felt comfortable enough to try and fail in this setting. Being at the public pool in front of strangers and peers definitely kept him from pushing himself to learn new techniques for fear of being stared at. Thank you for giving us this gift." - Jennifer H.
